December The twelve months slide, like opaque fusuma panels: paper made from the mulberry, framed by cedar wood, Scenes of mountain and forest, duality of door and wall, Transparent privacy, circulating light within the year of the house.

Essay Essentials

Poet Donald Hall has observed that aging poets tend to lose power in writing poetry as they age. Yet they can slide over into narrative prose and roam freely. Call us "free range poets." I like the freedom of the essay form. It's more accessible to readers. Photo: Morning Dance, Waikiki.

Pervasive Poetry

I’ve been writing poetry since third grade, when my Grandpa taught me how to rhyme; like giving Superman Kryptonite. I wrote and published poems in journals for several decades and published “The Reassurance of Ghosts” in 2016. I’m honored to be a three-time finalist for the Applewhite Poetry Prize.

The Essay Takes Flight

In the past three years, I've traveled to  Mexico, Indonesia and the Philippines, plus ten US States.  I would normally capture my travels in poems, but I've found that the travel narrative is  ideal for sharing my escapades and excursions with you,  following great travel  writers like Bruce Chatwin, Paul Theroux,  Pico Iyer and Peter Matthiessen. These are essentially chapbooks, distilling my trips in 100-pages . Photo: El, Nido, Palawan, Philippines
